Stan's Java Jive: 1/12/21
Kenny Albert Lands Top NBC Gig; The NHL Financial Realities; Coming Soon: Skating in Tahoe!!
HEADLINE: KENNY ALBERT TO BE TOP NBC-NHL PLAY BY PLAY GUY
THE JIVE: Albert will execute a perfect segue from legendary Doc Emrick. Kenny's rise to the top is well-earned and his versatility is incomparable. He'll bring a somewhat toned-down but no less exciting call to the post-Emrick era. Many listeners will find him the best they've ever heard. We're also delighted that NBC has added colorful Bruce Boudreau as a studio analyst.
HEADLINE: GARY BETTMAN: 'CHEAPER FOR US TO SHUT DOOR AND NOT PLAY.'
QUICK JIVE: The Commish is 100 percent right. Critics 100 percent wrong. NHL couldn't be better steered through tough times than by Gary Bettman and Bill Daly. Tough losing the big dough but Bettman move best for The Game, The League and Fans!
HEADLINE: BLUES SIGN MIKE HOFFMAN:
QUICK JIVE: He gets a year and $4 Mill. Good deal for both sides. But Blues real issue is in goal. And I don't mean maybe either!
HEADLINE: SHANE DOAN RETURNS TO COYOTES:
QUICK JIVE: The franchise icon will be the Yotes' "Chief Development Officer." Phoenix (Glendale) is working hard to put a playoff team on the ice. Nobody ever worked harder than Doan. Huge asset!
HEADLINE: CANUCKS PUT SVEN BAERTSCHI ON WAIVERS
QUICK JIVE: Travis Green plays no favorites. Vancouver's wise coach mentored Sven in Juniors with Portland Winterhawks. S.B. was A-1 then but N.G. enough for the fast-rising Canucks.
HEADLINE: NHL PLAYING DOUBLE-BILL IN LAKE TAHOE
QUICK JIVE: It'll be Avs vs. Vegas on February 20, and Flyers vs. Bruins on February 21. Ever- innovative NHL planners continue coming up with creative events and this tops 'em all. Figures to be fun!
HEADLINE: TORTS AND DEL ZOTTO RE-UNITE AS STRANGE BEDFELLOWS:
THE JIVE: As Rangers coach, John Tortorella could not control seemingly gifted Michael Del Zotto. Then again, if you check Del Zotto's assortment of teams since leaving New York, you have to wonder if D.Z. gets it or just doesn't get it. Mike says he's "matured" and Torts says D.Z. now "is a man." This much is certain the coach will control this so far unfulfilled talent. Question is this; where's the talent now?
HEADLINE: BOBBY RYAN CALLS HIS NEW LINEMATE DYLAN LARKIN A 'JERK' TO PLAY AGAINST.
THE JIVE: Ryan has been around long enough to know a jerk from a non-jerk. But this time "jerk" is a compliment. What Bobby means is that Larkin plays hockey like King Jerk — that Marchand fellow in Beantown.
HEADLINE: TUUKKA RASK REJOINS THE BRUINS
THE JIVE: All the Boston goalie will tell us is that he bolted the team when it needed him most because he felt his family needed him more. His daughter was ailing and duty called. Obviously all is forgiven which is as it should be. Family first and in this case it was the family-family not the hockey family.
